The new archbishop is a native of Hollabrunn in Lower Austria, within the Archdiocese of Vienna. He studied theology and organ in the Austrian capital and was ordained a priest in St. Stephen's Cathedral in 1988 by the then Archbishop, Cardinal Franz König. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn appointed Grünwiedl his secretary from 1995 to 1998 and episcopal vicar in 2023. Upon Schönborn's retirement as Archbishop of Vienna, Grünwiedl became the temporary head – Apostolic Administrator – of the archdiocese. Until then, he had been little known beyond the diocesan borders. The 62-year-old is considered an outstanding pastor. Unlike his predecessor, Grünwiedl has little experience with the universal Church. With approximately one million Catholics, Vienna is considered the most important diocese in Austria. In the past, the office of Archbishop of Vienna was usually linked to the cardinalate; Pope Francis broke with this practice.
